Who Is Directing The Upcoming Barbie?
Reportedly Greta Gerwig, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, was assigned to direct and write the new version of Barbie in 2019 with partner Noah Baumbach the director and writer of Marriage Story.
Barbie is quite an exception for Gerwig and Baumbach. Gerwig is also a renowned actress and is famous for her unique comedy dramas, while Baumbach is known for her dry generic films like The Squid and the Whale. The extraordinary duo evokes interest and makes the upcoming Barbie more fascinating and appealing.
What Is Starring In Barbie?
You cannot expect a world of Barbie dolls with a single pair of Barbie and Ken, so there isn’t just one; there are hundreds of dolls.
Therefore, you will see many stars in the movie, including pop star Dupa Lipa who will be playing Mermaid Barbie, Nichola Coughlan as diplomat Barbie, and Ana Cruze Kyne as supreme court justice Barbie.
However, President Barbie will be played by Insecure’s Issa Rae, Sex Education star Emma portrays a Barbie with a Nobel Prize, and Doctor Who actor appears in a guitar-playing Ken.
Reportedly, the star-studded cast continues here as it’s incomplete without Margot Robbie, known for her best performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and her role as Harley Quin in DC Suphero movies. Robbie will be portrayed as Barbie in the leading role. Besides, her production house LuckyChap Entertainment is given the task of producing the film with co-producers Mattle Films and HeyDay Films.
But what would Barbie be without Ken? So the actor with his notorious performances in Blade Runner and Drive Ryan Gosling signed as a leading role, Ken, as Gosling has also previously done projects like La La Land and Crazy Stupid Love, let’s see which one of his performances will be the right fit as his portrayal of Ken.
Robbie and Gosling are not only the big names as the list goes on and on with some other actors like Simu Lui, who appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, British actor Kingsley Ben Adir, Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon will be playing alternate Kens and Alexandra Ship starred as another Barbie.
The Crown’s Emerald Fennel will be performing as Barbie’s friend and Juno’s Michael Cera as Ken’s friend, while Scott Evan takes on the role of a cowboy hat-wearing Ken, Sharen Rooney, Ritu Arya and Rhea Perlman are also slated to appear in the movie.
For Human characters, there will be Ugly Betty’s star America Ferrara, Elf’s Will Ferrell, Jammie Demetriou, and Connor Swindells.
Dame Helen Mirren will be showing her vocal skills.
What Do We Get To Explore In The Movie?
The story plot details haven’t been shared clearly, but in referring to Robbie’s statement in an interview with British Vogue in June 2021, the leading star, Robbie, gave some hints to her fans to expect the unexpected.
It comes with a lot of baggage!” she said of the role. “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear Barbie and think, I know what that movie is goi”ng to be, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…
The same year, in Summer, Robbie was spotted speaking to a Hollywood Reporter about something similar.
Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie. I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted,’” Robbie said. “Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.
The cluster of stars will be seen as Barbie and Ken, adapted well to the 60-year history of this iconic toy, piquing curiosity, but the first teaser didn’t reveal much, either. The previous release of Barbie, in 2016, starring Amy Schumer, couldn’t be successful for several reasons; in which Schumer was thrown out of Barbieland as she couldn’t make out to their beauty standards.
The second teaser of the upcoming Barbie has been released in April, which gives some similar clues, followed by the earlier version as it features Robbie (Barbie) and Gosling (Ken) driving down the strange road that leads them towards the natural world from Barbieland. Barbie also glimpsed catching up on the meeting with the real-world toy CEO Will Ferrell.
Still, we cannot predict much about the extensive story plot, so wait until another trailer comes and unleashes more details about the movie.
What Did It Take To Slow Down The Production Process?
There are a number of reasons behind the delay of production – one of the significant reasons is many changes in the cast and creative team, while the other reason is COVID.
Comedian Amy Schumer starred in the earlier version to play as an honorary doll but discontinued due to some conflicts.
I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen,” Schumer said.
Then, Ann Hathway was supposed to take over, but eventually, Robbie Margot was announced as the film star and producer at the beginning of 2019 the was cast to play Barbie.
There were some other drop-outs, as Aletha Jones was also set to be a part of the project; the director changed as she was reportedly about to join Wonder Women director Petty Jenkins before Gerwigs took over in July 2021.
Then the lockdowns between 2020 and 2021 slowed down the process.
When Is Barbie’s Releasing Date?
The joint project between Barbie Manufacturer and Warner Bros, the most high-profile and successful version of Barbie so far, is set to hit the big screen this year on 21st July.
